How UV-C works

UV-C is short-wavelength ultraviolet light. At 254 nanometres — the wavelength this Philips lamp emits — it penetrates the cell of a microbe and damages the DNA and RNA inside it. With that genetic code disrupted, bacteria, viruses and mould spores in the air and on exposed surfaces can no longer reproduce, so the enclosed space is left disinfected after a cycle. It works as a physical mechanism, not a spray or chemical — there is no residue and no fragrance, only light doing the work inside a closed cabinet or sealed room.

UV-C is powerful — that is exactly why it works, and exactly why it must never reach skin or eyes. Operating it responsibly is simple:

  • Keep the cabinet or room clear of all people, pets and plants before switching on.
  • Close the cabinet door and use the cord and switch from outside — never run it open.
  • Never look at the lit tube and never expose skin or eyes to it.
  • Switch off and ventilate briefly, then the cabinet or room is ready to use again.

This is a surface-and-air disinfection device for empty cabinets and rooms. It is not a medical device and not a cure for any illness.

Your questions, answered

Is this a genuine Philips lamp, or a copy?
It is a genuine Philips (Signify) UV-C lamp from original stock, paired with our own (Jainsons-built) driver, in a fitting we build ourselves at Jainsons. You can verify the Philips branding on the tube itself. Counterfeit UV-C tubes are common in this category — buying from a 1978-established distributor with a GST invoice and four physical showrooms is your protection against that.
How does the cord and switch work?
It's plug-and-play. The tube comes with a cord and an on/off switch, so there's no wiring to do — place it inside the cabinet or box, run the cord out, close the door, and switch it on and off from outside. You never have to open the enclosure while the UV-C is on.
Is it safe? Will it harm my staff?
It is completely safe when used as intended: inside a closed cabinet or empty, closed room with no people, pets or plants exposed, switched on from outside using the cord and switch. UV-C must never reach skin or eyes directly. Treat it like a disinfection cycle — switch it on, let it run, switch it off, then open up. It is not a medical device and not a cure for any illness.
Can I use this 8W tube to disinfect a room?
This 8W 1 ft tube is made for small enclosed cabinets and DIY boxes, not open rooms. For a room, the standard is one 36W 4 ft tube for every 100 sq ft, run sealed and empty — so a 300 sq ft room needs three 36W tubes. Tell us your space on WhatsApp and we'll point you to the right tube.
How long do I run it for?
For a small enclosed cabinet or box, run a cycle with it closed and empty, then switch off and ventilate briefly. For a full room, use the 36W 4 ft tube — one per 100 sq ft, run sealed and empty for about 2–3 hours, adding one more 36W tube for each extra 100 sq ft rather than leaning on a single tube.
Do I get a GST invoice?
Yes. Every order ships with a GST invoice in your business name, so the tax can flow into your books as input credit. Tell us your GSTIN at order time and we'll bill it correctly.
What's the warranty, and what about the lamp?
Our own fitting carries a 1-year warranty. The Philips TUV UV-C lamp is rated for about 9,000 hours of useful life — it's a consumable, like any tube, so once it passes that its germicidal output has dropped and the tube should be replaced (even if it still lights up). We stock replacements, so re-ordering is straightforward.
Does UV-C replace cleaning, or cure infections?
No. UV-C is an added layer of surface-and-air disinfection for an empty cabinet or room — it works alongside normal cleaning, it doesn't replace wiping down visible dirt. It is not a medical device and not a treatment or cure for any illness or infection. Think of it as a disinfection cycle for the space itself, not a health treatment for people.
